RACING.

(WELLINGTON MEETING. NEXT WEEK'S ATTRACTION. THE TWO PRINCIPAL RACES. STEEPLES AND WINTER HURDLES. Willi the Wellington Winter Meeting only a few clays off, very keen interest is being shown. As a rule tho going is very heavy at Trentham nt this time of tho year, but if tlvt recent fine weather continues, next week's fixture will ho a uotnhlo exception. At present tho track is in oxcelleut order. Tho Wellington Steeplechase, to he run next Tuesday, and tho Winter Hurdles, to be run to-morrow week, are tho principal events of the meeting, each being of tho value of £IOOO. Aurora TSorealis, winner of the Great Northern Steeplechase last month, is top-weight in tho Wellington Steeplechase with 10.11, and is regarded as tho favourite. In tho last ten years two horses havo won tho two events in the same year, Coalition in 1921 and Beau Cavalier in 1927; indeed, they did more than that, for in each case the victor went on to triumph in tho third of tho three great cross-country races of the year, tho Grand National Steeplechase. There are three other horses in the field who ran in the Great Northern Steeplechase, theso being Odin, who was third, Matu, who was tho only one outside tho placed horses to finish, mid Mangani, who baulked. The recent victories of Radiate in tho South Island and of Flying Swift in Hawko's Bay compels attention to be paid to their prospects

The Winter Hurdles should be an exceptionally fino race. There nro 16 acceptors, compared with 10 in the steeplechase, and as far as the horses who raced in tho Great Northern Hurdles are concerned particular interest will he taken in the meeting once again of King's Jest, who won, Aurora Borealis, who was third, and Mister Gamp, who was going well when ha was brought clown. Taumai, Mangani and Mountain Guide are the Auckland representatives, and Onieo, who ran second in tho Great Northern Steeplechase, is Taranaki's hope. Much will depend on the form shown in earlier races at tho meeting, and one especially who is likely to come into strong favour if ho shapes well is the South Islander Amorist. YESTERDAY'S TRAINING.
