'I |,o parly removal of ( lie extra primage fluty was urged at the conference of the Manufacturers' Federation to-day, when tho following remit from Duncdin was carried: — "That the Government he urged to extend as rapidly ns possible the list of articles upon which the extra primage duty of 1 p»r cent, is remitted, with a view to the early removal of the whole of this form of taxation; and that, in tho Meantime, it is submitted that in all cases where the duly is remitted on any manufactured article, thero should be a corresponding remission on all tho raw materials used by local factories in tho manufacture of a similar article."
The meeting agreed that tho Customs Department be asked to revise tho incidence of classification for duty on raw materials used in tho manufacture or repair of articles within the Dominion. Jt was further agreed to urge that the proportion of tho British preferential tariff be altered from 50-50 to 75-25. It was contended that a great amount of goods was coining into New Zealand in which a lot of the work and material came from the Continent, the British proportion being down to the minimum.
