LADIES' HOCKEY.

IMPROVEMENT IN STANDARD. CLEVEDON GAINS FIRST WIN. The fine weather on Saturday last enabled the Auckland Ladies' Hockey Assuciati"n to proceed with a further series of games. Tho grounds at Remuera were much drier than on tho previous week

and as a result the standard of play was slightly better, the players being not so apt to slip or over-run tho ball In tho senior grade, business girls' section, C'levedon beat Somervillo by 5 goals to 1 and scored its first win of the season; Mount Eden defeated Y.W.C.A. by 6 to 0, and Wesley accounted for Kiwi 5 to 2.

In the gamo between Somervillo arid Clevcdon the former did not play with anything like its usual vim and Clevedon did not appear to have much difficulty in holding the better of tho game throughout, particularly in tho first half. Clevcdon scored its threo goals during this period, Miss D. Hydo netting twico and Miss Duder onco. During tho second half Clevedon was not nearly so aggressive, and on several occasions near the end of the game Somerville had it defending hard, with Miss J. Munro, of Clevedon, playing a good gamo in goal. Miss Cochrane, of Somerville, at last found an opening and netted her team's one and only goal for the game. For Clevcdon Misses J. Munro, MrCnllough, Hydo and Duder played games worthy of comment, and for Somervillo Misses Russell, Cochrane, Simms and Goldsbro, in goal, did specially good work for their side.

The Kiwi-Wesley gamo was expected fo prove one of the best displays of the day. However, this view was ultimately proved incorrect when Wesley ran out winners by a margin of three goals. Play went up and down field until half-time, whei tho score was 2 to 1 in Wesley's favour, Miss Burton netting both goals for Wesley and Miss M. Waters one for Kiwi. Shortly after half-time Kiwi made a very determined attack and Miss McLaughlin was able to find the net with a very hard shot from an angle, making tho scoro even. From then on for the groatci part play concentrated in and near tho Kiwi nrelo and in spite of great work by Miss Andrews in tho Kiwi's goal Wesley, through Miss Burton, who played an outstandingly fine gamo, although marred at times by offside plav, and Miss Clark, was ablo to increase its lead by threo more goals. The Mount Eden-Y.W.C.A. gamo was not very full of incident, although at times sumo good attacking movements were carried out by both sets of forwards, and also some good defensive work was displayed by the back divisions of both teams. I3y half-time Mount Ednn, although having played uphill, was two goals to the good. After resumption Mount Eden had completo control of tho game and the ball was rarely seen out of Y.W.C.A.'s territory for long. Mount Eden increased its total to 6, while Y.W.C.A. never onco netted. Misses Hayes and Lowe and Mrs. Hamblin played good games for Mount Eden/while Misses Brown und Phillips were the outstanding players for tho other team. All junior grade game 3 have been post poned next Saturday to permit representative trials being played at 2.30 p.m The samo procedure will be followed on July 12. In the senior grade all games will be played early on Saturday next and representative trials will follow at 3 5 p.m. On Jul/ 12 all senior grado games will be postponed to permit further representative trials. The names of players chosen to participate in representative trials arc expected fo bo announced by to-morrow. At a dinner to bo held on Saturday evening the fissociation is presenting badges to its two life members, Mrs. Fuller arjd Mra. Cowen.
