BOXING RING.
CATERING FOR AMATEURS. ACTIVITIES AT TE AWAMUTU. Te Awamutu must surely be the most progressive provincial town in New Zealand as far as boxing is concerned, Under tho presidency of Mr.- Charles A. Reilly, the To Awamutu Young. Men's Institute is doing a great deal to encourage and foster amateur boxing. Its tourneys are invariably of high order and not only local lads are seen in action, but also amateurs from as far afield as Auckland. The institute lias entered some good boys for the amateur championships of South Auckland and Auckland during recent years, and will again be doing: so this year. It is quite possible To Awamutu will have a team at the New Zealand championships, which will be held at Palmerslon North.
The institute has arranged for its second tourney of the season to be held next Monday, when the main Imuts will be as follows:—A. Craig (Y.M.1.) v. J. Greer (Auckland), R. Parkinson (Y.M.1.) v. R. Thompson (Auckland), Terry Mullins (Arapuni), v. L. Paintea (Auckland), J. Wilson (Frankton) v. A. Spragg (Auckland). Besides these there will be eight or nine other bouts between institute members and an Auckland team from Mr. V. Hogg's gymnasium. The referee will be Mr. W. Palmer.
The disqualification of Pat Connors as a manager of boxers was a great surprise to many. It was alleged that Connors gave a certain boxer a prescription containing cocaine. Connors denied this, stating that he used a tonic, the prescription of which he..produced and which he considered was not injurious. r Jhe New Zealand Council, however, considered it advisable to take action. Connors was going to seek legal advice, but so far nothing further has been heard. The New Zealand Council is still negotiating with the Australian Amateur Union regarding a New Zealand team competing at Melbourne in September. This will be an added incentive for amateurs this year and it should cause some hard fighting at the New Zealand championships in August. T. Mclnnes, so popular in Auckland in 1928, recently stated that lie would retire if lie could not do better in Australia. According to latest reports he dropped -v decision to " Snowy ' Beasley in. 12 rounds at Leichhar.lt Stadium. According to latest advice <T. Lcckie will meet Ted Nelson 011 Saturday week, and not July 19. as previously announced, lie then goes to New Plymouth for a bout with Donovan. Leckin is due to meet Bert Osborne at Wellington 011 .Tulv 28.
