POSTMAN SENT TO GAOL. MAGISTRATE'S SERIOUS VIEW. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWV CORRESPONDENT.! WELLINUTON, Tuesday. " I am not ablo to look lightly on a charge against a postal officer of theft from packets trusted to him," said Mr. E. Page, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court to-day, when sentencing William George McLean, aged 26, Iho postman who pleaded guilty on Friday to seven charges of theft of letters containing money totalling £l6 18s 6d, the property of the Postmaster-General.
" The safety of tho postal service and the integrity of the officers seem to mo to bo matters of paramount public importance," said Mr. Page. " Accused lias committed a breach of tmst on seven occasions and I propose to sentenco him to six months' imprisonment." Sentenco was imposed on tho first charge, accused being convicted and ordered to come, up for sentenco if called upon on tho others.
