A PEOPLE'S MARKET
Sir, —What has become of Mr. C. J'.Penneit's most important proposal, namely, that Auckland should have a mail citv market ? lias'it been shelved? Where such a market is a boon to the, community is in the sale of small landholder's produce, and also :n creating a market. for the fruit, vegetables, etc., which may be of a second-grade quality, and which would, in the. onlinary cours-i of events, most probr.bly be wasted. \- people's market provides cheaper food. I venture to say that another direct benefit. from a retail market in Auckland would, be a stimulation enterprise m regard to small .suburban hohhngs. Many hundreds of small holders, and many more to come, would gladly welcome --r----opportunity of supplementing their earnings by the close cultivation cvhich is so"' readilv achieved in our generous climate and soil,. To-day ihcie no >alo for anything but strictly lirst-grade. Every citv in Australia, every town m i ' Scotland and Ireland, every hamlet in Europe has its markets for the people. Are we so un.iiue, that, wo can do without one? V, e certainly do in.; differ in logard to unemployment, vhieh 11 market would undoubtedly initil.et us i rogress by mining thev : vacant triangle of land at the entrance I to Prince's Wharf hv a modern P^P 10 :' | market and bring untold good thousands, i hn-.c yet to lean, ot an vtossiblrt objection t, this move. ,1 k Ali ~].o pv ,: i - « moment s thought wi readily realise to be a ir.ost dtsuaU* and sound proposition.
