CASES AT OTAHUHU. FINE OF £4O IMPOSED. The opinion that defendant was either much intoxicated or much experienced in tho circumstances was expressed by Mr. F. H. Levion, S.M., in convicting Stanley Francis Roulston Holmes, a tourist from England, in tho Otahuhu Police Court yesterday, on a charge of being intoxicated while in charge of a car on the Great South Road on June 17. Accused was fined £4O and his driver's licence was cancelled for 12 months. Ho was allowed 48 hours in which to pay the fine. Ho did not appear in answer to tho charge, his counsel, Air. M. J. Sullivan, explaining that he was too upset. A plea of guilty was entered. Sergeant Howell said that on the evening of Juno 16, defendant took three friends, two of whom were women, from Auckland in a hired car into the countrv. About 1 a.m., the car capsized in rounding a bend on the Great South Road at Wiri. None of tho occupants was injured. Also on a charge of being intoxicated when in charge of a car, William Henry Kendall was fined £ls and had his licence cancelled for 12 months 110 was given six weeks in which to' pay the fine.

Constable Archibald stated that between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, he found several men struggling in the yard of a hotel at Otahuhu. "He met a friend whom lie had not seen for a long time," said counsel, "but I suppose it is the old story. They went into a hotel for a drink, and as -accused was not used to drinking he soon found himself overcome by the whisky. J sug gest that, being of musical temperament, the whisky made him excited."
