ADULT APPRENTICES.

DUTY OF EMPLOYERS. REGISTRATION OF AGREEMENT. The duty upon employers to register special agreements, in cases where adult workers are given employment at less than tradesmen's wages to enable them to learn a trade, was given prominence in a case in the Otahuhu Magistrate's Court yesterday, when the registrar of apprentices, William Slaughter, proceeded against James Gardiner on an information for failing to register a contract of apprenticeship. The registrar said defendant was interested in a bakery at Otahuhu, He engaged a young man, 21 years of age, who wished to learn the trade. There was an arrangement that by special contract the young man was to bo apprenticed. Such special contracts bad to bo submitted to the Apprenticeship Committee. Aftor about 10 weeks the young man was dismissed. Defendant said tho young man proved incompetent. A fino of £l, with costs, £l, was imposed.
