NATIVES OF PACIFIC.
RESEARCH INTO ORIGIN. WORK BY NEW ZEALANDER. Research into the history of the ancient people of the Pacific i:i being carried out by Mr. Arthur Vogan, formerly of Auckland, who is a passenger to Suva by the Aorangi,, which arrived at Auckland from Sydney yesterday. Mr, Vogan, who is a noted archaeologist, has carried on his work in New Caledonia, investigating, among other tilings, numerous wood and stone carvings which, ho believes, aro traces of an ancient civilisation. " I wish to spend some time in tho Fiji group, as I think that T may find thero the. itolutionu to several problems which have faced mo in New Caledonia," Mr. Vogan said. "Afterwards I shall return to Noumea to continue my investigations thero with tho object of proving that tho Maoris and other native races of the Pacific were at ono time members of tho 'great race' which inhabited the Gobi Desert." While working in New Caledonia some years ago, Mr. Vogan his heart and had to return to Australia for a period of rest. Now he is eager to be at his work again. He possess,e« ari exceptionally fine collection of fabrifacts dealing with Asian sun-culture in the Pacific and may present it to the War Memorial Museum. Mr. Vogan has been a Follow of tho Royal Geographical Society since 1886, and he is also a member of the- Polynesian Society and the National Geographical Society of tho United States.
