MAN'S ANXIETY FOR WORK.
JOURNEY OF 36 MILES ON FOOT.

Resulting from discussion in which a Patea resident is said to have contended that unemployed men would accept work only in suitable occupations, the resident finally offered £1 for tho task of wheeling a barrow on foot to Hawera and back. Twenty-four unemployed married men participated in the baliot. Mr. A. .T. Macdonald, aged 52 years, who drew tho lucky marble left Patea at three o'clock this morning. After encountering heavy rain arid bitterly cold conditions during the early miles lie reacliod Ilawera at 9.15. 110 left on the return trip at 10.30 atid arrived back at Patea at 5.15 p.m., tho journey of 36 miles wheeling the barrow having taken 14 hours, including spells. A collection taken up i-rnong the crowd which greeted him more than doubled tho original prize.
