NOTES ON THE FORM.

ASTON SPRINGS SURPRISE.

FLYING SWIFT'S GOOD EFFORT. WINNING RIDE FOR GOLDFINCH. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] NAPIER, Saturday, A rise of 14lb. in the handicap did not stop backers making Llyn Dhu favourite for the Waiohiki HurdleS at Napier to-day, and lie duly won Llyn Dhu • and High Society rushed to the front at the half-mile and stayed, together to the last fenco, from which point Llyn Dhu drew away to beat High ,Society by two lengths, with Deluge four, .lengths back, .just' ahead of Masher. Llyn. Dhu jumped well and outpaced the opposition. High Society and Deluge ran ip to form arid Masher improved. , Thospv who Jaid/the odds on Blue Paper in tho Greenmeadows Hack Handicap were left with thefc-'tickets, although she received all the best of the jump out. Arrowzone soon joined Blue Paper in' the lead from Arrowhead and Taranto. Taranto was up with tho two leaders at the turn, with Arrowhead coming through on the rails. Blue Paper dropped out of the struggle rearing the post, and Taranto won going away by a length and a-half from Arrowhead, who beat Blue Paper by three-quarters of a length. Lady Spy and Arrowzone followed at intervals. Taranto won well aad is" a fair galloper in this class. Arrowhead had every ..chance and Blue, Paper failed under pressure. . A Substantial Dividend. A sprinter, Aston, judioiously ridden by Mr. H. Dodds, was too good for tho opposition in the amateur .riders' race, returniry; a substantial double-figure dividend. Aston, Whakaue and Grattua turned for home clear of Mirabiliary., Aston, still had a spurt left in him and beat of! a determined challenge by Grattus by a head. Rory Mor, who finished well on thf rails, was half a length aways third, with Mirabiliary, Whakaue and Corneroi! noxt. Horsemanship aided Aston to win. and both Grattus and Rory Mor put up good efforts under weight. Mirabiliary did not receive a good run early. Whakaue was not suited by the hard track. H,' Goldfinch brought his first winner home after his accident, some months ago when Bornera, scored m the principal flat race. Bold Front was a good favourite, but although ho finished well his best was a clobo third Bornera led Shortly, Paiko, Moutoa Treasury and Goblin Market at the half-mile, with Potoaform coming up, Bernera lost his place going to the turn, where Royal Damon rushed to the front,, to'join Queen's Choice. Royal the opposition until riuht on tho "post, when Bernera flashed up to..win by a head. Bold Front, who c&rae solidly on the outside, was half a head away third. Moutoa Treasury, Paiko and Queen's Choice, together, were next, and then came Goblin Market and Bernera registered a solid performance and both Royal Damon and Bold Front ran excellent races. Potoaform and Shortly are likely winners soon. Display of Fast Jumping.

Probably the best display of fast jumping Been for a long time was that given by Flying Swift, who won the Park Steeplechase. Wyeford went out to set a great pace and was easily 10 lengths clear of tho socond horse at one stage, while Flying Swift was in the rear of a strung out field. A little more than a mile from homo Flying Swift started a run which took him to Wyeford at tho last fence and tho rest was easy. Certainly Wyeford was tiring, but the way Flying Swift sailed past horse after horse and taking his fences in his stride stamped him as a really good horse. He is well worthy of his Grand National nomination. He was favourite for the race, with Red Bank more in demand by the publio than Brigadier Bill. Master . Arch lost his rider at the first fence in the straight, and after the stand double was crossed Rod Bank, Brigadier Bill and Tim! Pouri just led Flying Swift, with Wyeford still many lengths in front of all. WharncliSe's Prospects. Flying Swift then started his run. He caught Wyeford and beat him home by six lengths Wharncliffe, who had been with Flying Swift in the early stages, was galloping strongly in third place, six lengths back. Then came Brigadier Bill,, Timi Pouri, and Red Bank at intervals. Apart from Flying Swift, Wharncliffe's effort was the outstanding one. Ridden by an amateur ho gave a smooth display. By the way he jumps and gallops a good race looks sure to come his way. Adventus had the call over Lordliko in the betting on the concluding event, but Adventus received all the ill-luck of the race, and finished a good third. Lordlike showed considerable improvement to win very decisively. Mothplane collided with Royal Songster just prior to the race, receiving an injury- which compelled her withdrawal. Royal Songster, King Manu, Cloyne and Spearfortn wero the first to turn for home. Over the last bit, however, .Lordlike, under pressure, dashed up in great style to win very decisively by a length and a-half from Royal Songster with Adventus also finishing well a length away third. Goldlike and Ilystride wore next. The winnor is a good galloper, who stands up to vigorous riding. Ho showed that his form on the opening day was wrong. Royal Songster is an attractive galloper who will win races. Goldliko ran a really good race. FIELD OF TWO HORSES. HURDLES EVENT AT NAPIER. [by telegram.-—own correspondent.] - ' i- NAPIER. Saturday. It is soldom that only two horscß start in a handicap in Now Zealand, but this was the slate of affairs when the Poraite Hurdles came up for decision at the Napier Park meeting, to-day. . L ,■ , ' Rakauponga naturally was at odds on, but tho prico was reasonable. lialakaua jumped out first and ranged up with'him in the middle stages, but from then on Rakauponga came on to win as ho liked by six lengths.
