THE GREAT SOUTH ROAD.

Sir, —" P.A.," Tuakau, in his letter to the Herald on June 26, says that only a few ratepayers in the Bombay-Runci-nian districts oppose the route suggested for the main highway through Tuakau and Pukekohe. I venture to express an opinion that from Runciman, Bombay, Pokeno and Mercer and outlying distriels, such as Mangatawhiri and Karaka, Maramarua, Miranda, Paparata and several others, all oppose any alteration, and maintain that the present route through •the Bombay .deviation is. the only reasonable one for the main highway to Auckland. " P.A. " asserts that the Tuakau-Pnkekolie -route would be only five miles further, and that the extra distance would be covered in six minutes. Fivo miles in six minutes is some speed on a main highway. The present route from Pokeno to Auckland is miles. The route suggested through Tuakau - and Pukekohe is not less than 44 miles, add the extra cost of concreting this nine miles or so on that route to the cost of concreting the present route and the question would decide itself. One* notes the agitatioh for the users of the road to pay for it, which is only fair, and in time will take effect. If so, then the motorist would not want nine miles added to his journey. " P.A." . says that if the Tuakau route was adopted the deviation route would not be finished. I venture to say the people who have purchased farms along that route since the deviation was opened would require to -have it finished to. give access .to their properties. The county would then have to maintain the Razorback Road, and the deviation as well. Most people agree that an outlet is necessary from Pokeno to Tuakau, but not the main high' way. Geo. Rodgees, Pokeno.
