BUILDING BY-LAWS.

FLATS AND BOARDING HOUSES NEW PROVISION IN CITY. The City Council has adopted a by-law, submitted by tho Town Planning Committee, relating to tenement and apartment houses. It had been prepared by tho city engineer after conferring with representatives of the Auckland branch of tho New Zealand Institute of Architects. Construction in the future of all apartment and boarding houses, private and licensed hotels, lodging houses and hostels in fireproof materials and subject to limitations of design and sito is provided for. Among the points dealt with aro height of buildings and percentage of tho lot which may bo occupied by tho building, courts for lighting and ventilation, occupation of basements or cellars as living places, size and ventilation of rooms, provision of fire escapes, artificial lighting whero natural lighting is insufficient and garbage collection.
