ORGAN AND CHOIR RECITALS* QUESTION OF CONTINUANCE.

Investigation of the question whether municipal organ and choir recitals should be continued has been decided upon by the City Council. Details of attendances, receipts and expenditure in respect of recitals for the • past three financial years were presented to the council at the request -of Mr. G. Grey Campbell. The return of organ recitals showed that 28 recitals for adults were given in 1927-28, 29 in 1928-59 and 59 in 1929-30. Admission charges were made at nine and eight of these respectively in the first two years and the attendances were 2.466 and 904 respectively. All recitals in the third year were free-. No return of attendances was taken except when a charge was made. Threa children's recitals were given in each year. The receipts from ticket sales were £3l and £SO. iri the first two years, and from broadcasting fees £6O and £6B respectively. There were no receipts last year. Payments, including the city organist's salary and not including hall, rental, were £ll3B, £IOBO and £IG44 for the three years. Municipal choir recitals numbered six, five and seven respectively.. The attendances were 3421, 1659 and 2318, and ticket sales £ll2, £53 and £74. In addition, £2l was received in broadcasting fees last year. Members' subscriptions and payments for budges totalled £24, £l3 and £l7. Payments amounted to £ll4, £159 and £139, not including hall rental. Air. Campbell said the report showed that the council should consider whether this branch of activity should be continued. He moved that the Finance Committee and Messrs. G W. Hutchison; HI P. Burton. E.
