SPORTING TRIAL.

THIS WEEK'S EVENT. During.tho present week-end tho North Shore Motor-cycle Club ' will ', stage .its " sporting trial," which is to be conducted on similar lines to. the famous annual English fixture, tho Scott> scramble." Competitors will assemble at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Hall's Corner, Takapuna, and wjll then proceed to Albany, in the noighbourhopd of which tho trial will bo hold, '.The course includes a two-mile stretch of rough cross-country travelling on .;which there will bo various " observed " sections. Points will bo deducted for a series, of offences involving stalling, slopping, footing, falling, etc. At the orid of the crosscountry run tliei-Q will' be} a' length of road work of partly metal and..;partly clay, surfaces which must, be negotiated at an average speed 0f;25 miles per hour. The trial will conclude with a " colonial section," including a .stiff hill-climb for which 10 points arto to lie allocated to the competitor establishing the best performance. Members of both the local clubs have entered and the fixture promises to be well-con-torted and full of intsr jit. . LOOAL FIXTURES. The Sports Motor-cycle Club annually conducts a speed-judging contesti and last week-end this fixture was duly held. Competitors assembled at the Western Springs arid were required to average 18 m.p.h. from the.starting point to the end of the concrete at Henderson. Iwenty. miles an -hour was set for the journey on to "Huapai, 26 m.p.h. from Huapai to Waitakere, 10 m.p.h. to Swanson, via a side road, which included a wet clay section, and 23 m.p.h. from Swanson to Western Springs. The test was closely checked by the two observers, H.; Fletcher and W. Marett, whose records showed a great variety of speeds recorded. The final placings were:— P. Fletcher 490 c.c. The Tourist Trophy races at, the Isle of Man have • resulted -in a sweeping victory for Rudge-Whitworth machines, which secured first, second and third places in the Junior, and first and second in the Senior. The results of the- lightweight event have not yet been sent to New Zealand, and -it is . therefore not known how the various makes of machine fared, but in the two other T.T. races, Rudge-Whitworth secured five out of six places. 'The Senior winner was W. L. Handtey, who averaged 72.24 miles an hour, a new record for .the couree. Handley won the Junior in 1925, _on a Rex-Acme, and was at first to ride a Belgium, mount, an F.N., in the Senior this year, but evidently changed to the Rudge-Whitworth team a# the last moment. Graham Walker, who was second, was third in this year's Junior, and among his more recent successes are first and record lap in the 1929 Ulster Grand Prix, first in the Leinster " 100 " for the past two years, first in the 1928 Dutch T.T., and second in the *1929' Dutch <T.IV< J. Simpson, the Norton rider, who was third in this year's Senior, has also ridden in the T.T. and other big races for many years. For the Erevious two years, the Senior was won y C. J.' P. Dodson, tin a Sunbeam machine. He held the lap record at 73.55 miles an hour. Percy Coleman, evidently had bad luck in both the' Junior arid Senior events. According .to the cables, he fell in the Junior, and had to retire with valve trouble in the Senior. HUH GARIAN T.T. . The Hungarian Tourist Trophy : races held recently resulted in a win for an English rider, astride an A.J.S., in the , 350 c.c. class, while a local man riding n Francis-Burnett, was successful' in the :175 c.c. The Standing Committee of the British House of Commons considering the Road Traffic Bill in the House of Commons has approved tlip proposal to abolish the speed-limit for privato vehicles.
