WILHELM BACKHAUS.

In London, in Paris, in Vienna—in fact, in all the great musical centres abroad— Wilhelin Backhans is regarded as the ideal pianist for students to try to emulate, and at his recitals there are always numerous music pupils armed with pencils and scores, for Backhaus is the recognised authority on the great masters. His marvellous technique never is allowed to obtrude itself for mere display; his fingers stroke and caress and pat tho nott3 with perfect confidence; digital difficulties for Backhans simply do not exist; his sureness is as amazing as the marvellous velocity of his prestos; and his serenity and confidence communicate themselves to his auditors. It goes without saying that Auckland students will grasp the opportunity of hearing this world-famous pianist when he gives bis three recitals in this city, for Backhaus has now reached the very pinnacle of success. The New Zealand tour, which is under tho E. J. Gravestock direction, will open next Thursday night at the Town Hall, and there will also be recitals on Saturday, July 5, and Monday, July 7. The box plans will open next Monday morning.
