OYSTER PICKERS FINED.
OFFENCE AT WHANOAREI. WARNING BY MAGISTRATE. . [I)Y TETiEOIUnr.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHANGAREI, Wednesday. A charge of picking oysters in the Wliangarci Harbour was preferred against Richard Robertson and John Dent in thd' Magistrate's Court to-day. Defendants pleaded guilty. The- caso - had been adjourned and at- tho previous hearing the inspector of fisheries said defendants had picked oysters from beds specially laid by tho Fisheries Department for tho propagation of tho shellfish. For defendants Mr. R. K. Trimmer said that had it been known that these wero specially-prepared beds thoy would not have been touched. e Tho magistrate said that ns this was tho first offence of this nature in Whangarei for many years, and as the witness' expenses wero very heavy, ho would only inflict a light fino, but if-there was any repetition a heavy fino would bo inflicted. Defendants wero each fined £2 and costs, £7 ss.
