BASIC SLAG FREIGHTS.

Largo concQSsions in llio freight rates on basic slag imported from Europe have becoino an important factor in encouraging the use of this fertiliser in New Zealand. It is estimated that tho total shipments during tho current fertiliser year will amount to about 60,000 tons. Four shipping lines, tho Now Zealand Shipping Company, tho Federal Company, tho Commonwealth and Dominion Line, and the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, have an arrangement under which they parcel out tho cargo into equal lots, and thus tho burden from the point of view of assisting primary production in Now Zealand is equally distributed. Basic slag cargoes always arrive in tho early part of tho year, mainly from Antwerp, which is tho central port of loading for almost all vessels. Auckland is tho principal port of discharge, only small quantities going to the South Island.
