UNLICENSED MOTORISTS.
! FLOUTING COURT ORDER. | PRISON PENALTY FAVOURED. i A suggestion that the penalty for of- | fenders who drive motor vehicles after their licences have been cancelled by the Courts should be amended to cive magistrates power t-o impose a sentence of imprisonment at their discretion instead of the fine of £5. which is at present the maximum penalty, was recently made by Mr. F. K Hunt, 5.M., in a letter to the Minister of Jnstice. He has now received a reply that the suggestion was forwarded to the recent transport conference in Wellington and was approved by members. The suggestion has been included in the recommendations to be made by the conference to the Minister of Transport for inclusion in the Statutes. Mr. Hunt stated yesterday that he bad recently dealt, with two cases in which drivers had been detected drivj ing cars after their licences had been i cancelled by magistrates. In the c.rdil nary course of events where a man who had not obtained a licence was found driving a fine was a sufficient penalty, but in cases where a driver had been put off the road ly order of ihe Court and had deliberately Seated that order, the provision of a gaol penalty for extreme cases was desirable.
