SPORT OF CYCLING.

;manukau amateur club. •.) AVERY WINS FINE RACE. The second race conducted by the Manufeau Amateur Cycling Club over its new circuit on Saturday attracted a field of 20 starters. Although there was a steady breeze blowing, it tended to help more than to hinder the competitors, especially up the long climb a mile from home. R. T. Baston, 4m 10s, and his comarker, C. Hansen, were tho first two to pass the judges on the completion of the first lap, with the others spread out. E. J. Avery, 2m 10s, completed the first lap in 13m 325, eight seconds faster than the two scratch men, Wade and Dwight. During the second round the loaders were joined by Avery and V. Gorddn, ,3m, with tho former rider still maintaining his lead for time honours. Avery and Gordon still held their advantage over the concluding lap and in a fast and close finish the former won by a narrow margin, with R. T. Baston third and E. Cleaver fourth. The winner took 42m 17s for the joruney. The sprint for time honours between Wade and Dwight resulted in a win by a length for Wade, .whose timo was nine seconds faster than that of tho winner. Avery by the convincing manner in which he rode throughout the race threatens to bo a hard proposition in future events. This rider had time honours, by a margin of eight seconds, from the two scratch men, during the first two laps, but once tho winner had caught tho leaders his pace slackened and consequently Wade and Dwight picked up on hiin for time in tho concluding stages. V. H. Gordon again rodo well to tfain second place, thus making it tho third similar place he has filled in his three last starts. In each case he has met a slightly stronger finisher than himself. R. T. Baston put up a good performance to ride into third pace and as ho is only new to the game he will go a great deal farther as ho becomes more accustomed to cycle racing. J. 11. Wado and H, R. Dwight both figured on scratch and theso two, pacing well throughout, went a great race, tho former getting the verdict in 42m 9s. This was Dwight's first appearance on lii® road for some time.
