MOTORING FATALITIES.

CONCERN IN HAMILTON. SPEED LIMIT DESIRED. [B2 TELEGRAPH- —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON, Thursday. Concern at the number of fatal motor, ing accidents which have occurred on the Hamilton-Ngaruawahia section of the Main South Road during the past few weeks was expressed to-day at a meeting called to consider preventive measures in Hamilton. The meeting was convened by the ratepayers in the area representatives of the Waipa County Council, Mr. J. A. Young, M.P. for Hamilton, and Mr. J. Gilbert, representing the Auckland Automobile Association, being present. Mr. R. McCaw presided. "There are few places in New Zealand outside the cities where the traffic is heavier than it is on this road," said Mr. J. E. Tidd. He suggested that the Ham ilton Borough Council and the Waipa County Council should be asked to co-op-erate in taking action. The speed of motor-vehicles descending the hill at the No. 1 bridge was very often in excess of 50 iniles per hour. Mr. S. Mackay, chairman of the Waipa County Council, said the council favourably viewed the introduction of a speed limit, but the motorists opposed it. A remit suggesting that a definite limit bo fixed had been forwarded to the forthcoming conference of county councils. On the motion of Mr. Tidd, it was decided to ask the Hamilton Borough Council, the Waipa County Council and the Auckland Automobile Association to confer witJi a view to fixing a safo speed limit between Mill Street in the borough and Sunshine Avenue in the county. Mr. Tidd also moved that the controlling authorities be requested to improve the approaches to the No. 1 Bridge and to consider Ulster Street as an alternative entrance to Hamilton. The motion was carried.

With a view to protecting school children and pedestrians using tho road, it was decided to ask the Waipa County Council to construct a footpath north of the Whitiora Bridge to Sunshine Avenue.
