TROTTING.

AUCKLAND MEETING. TO-MORROW'S ATTRACTION. MARK MEMORIAL PROSPECTS. DOUBT ABOUT GREAT PETER. Most of the outside candidates for the Auckland Trotting Club's Winter Meeting aro now at Epsom, and tho arrival of many southerners in tho past few days has quickened interest in the meeting. Yesterday there was moro activity on tho tracks than there has been for some time past and tho work attracted considerable attention. Tho best effort was registered by Warplano and Wilrna Dillon, who wont attractively over a mile and a-half, and others who pleased were Cardinal Logan, Neeoro, Denver City, Country King and Benefice. There is little fresh to report in connection with tho C. F. Mark Memorial Handicap, the leading event to-mor;ow, except that Logan's Pride and Linkman have advanced in favour einco it became known that Great Peter was an unlikely starter. Inquiries made yesterday elicited tho information that Great Peter has not been altogether pleasing his trainer and a decision as to whether he will be a runner will probably bo made this afternoon. Another race besides the leading event that is creating keen discussion is the Cornwall Handicap, the tight-class sprint race, and it seems to be generally agreed that the issue is very open. Warplano, Ngahuia and Hal Chimes are expected to mako bold showings off the limit, and others whose chances aro fancied are Wilma Dillon, Vendome, Carmel and Linkman. Horses on or near the limit have a decided advantage in races of this description, and for that reason there is sure to -bo solid support for Warplane, Ngahuia and Wilma Dillon. TRAINING AT EPSOM. BEST EFFORT BY WARPLANE. FORM OF SOUTHERN HORSES. Thero was a good muster of horses at Epsom yesterday, when tho dirt training track was in better order than it has been for some days 1 past, and quite a lot of work was accomplished. However, the proceedings wero not a3 interesting as anticipated, owing to the fact that few horses were asked to do anything in the way of time-making, trainers for tho most part being content to work their charges soundly without extending them fullyi All eyes wero on Linkman (Alborn), Wilma Dillon (Tomkinson), Logan's Prido (D. Watts), Vondomo (E. Kennerley) and Warplane (Shaw) when they went out together to go a milo and a-half. For some reason ■or other they went off in very straggling order, Linkman going away in front somo lengths clear, while Warplane lost considerable ground by skipping. However, Linkman set a slow pace over the first few furlongs and at the mile post thoy were well bunched. Hero the speed increased, and when they entered on the last half-milo Linkman was just leading, with Vendome (rails) and Wilma Dillon together, and then Logan's Pride and Warplane. Along tho back the speed was clapped right on and Linkman was still leading at tho foot of the straight, where he broke and stopped Vendome. Warplane and Wilma Dillon then came on on Aho outsido to finish several lengths clear of Logan's Pride. Warplane's timo for the mile and a-half was a tick under 3.24, while Wilma Dillon's was a shade Blower. Tho last halfmilo was run in 1.6. Warplane, Wilma Dillon and Logan's Pride all worked well, but Linkman did not impress. Country King's Effort. Goldman, nnhoppled, was indulged in a solid work-out over two miles, but did notimpress. Audo Spray was also worked soundly over two miles and trotted along solidly without showing any particular speed. Denver City (Hendricksen) was stepped along over a distance, running halves in 1.9 4-5, 1.11 2-5, -and 1.13. Denver City appears to bo a solid customor and should race well in his engagements here. After hopping off at tho two-mile postand running a half in 1.11, Torpedo Huon (McMahon) was joined at the mile and a-half post by Country King (Tomkinson) and Belle o' Mine (Pope). They raced in close company for about a circuit, when Bello o' Mine broko and dropped back. Country King and Torpedo Huon then wdnt at a sound pace and finished almost on terms. Country King ran the milo and a-half in 3.28 and Torpedo Huon tho two miles in 4.38 4-5. the lost half-milo taking 1.6 4-5. Country King paced with plenty of freedom and gained many friends. Torpedo Huon also went very satisfactorily, while Belle o' Mino was pacing well until she broke. Cardinal Logan's Dasb. Explosion (Clifton) and Benefice (Morrison) wero companions in a sound piece of work. Benefice easing up when leading about a furlong from tho post. Explosion going on to run the last mile of a mile and a-lialf in 2.17 3-5. Benefice showed a nice turn of speed, and Explosion, who has been tried as a trotter in his work on occasions lately, paced very evenly. Chrystal (Nightingale) und Roma Bingen (Smith) wero worked along over two miles. They did not have the right on, but Chryßtal paced with plenty of freedom and Roma Bingen went solidly. Gold Dial (Webb) was several lengths | clear of All Bell (Cockbill) at tho conclusion | of a mile, the last half of which was covered ,in 1.9. Gold Dial was always going nicoly, but All Bell was a very tired horse at tho finish. i Cardinal Logan (Hendricksen) and Neeoro, who was ridden by A. Rattray, were associated in a soundly-run two miles, Cardinal Logan finishing several lengths in front to register 3.34 4-5 for the last milo and a-half, tho last half-milo taking 1.8. Cardinal Logan infused plenty of dash into his work and Noeoro also pleased by giving a very smooth display of pacing. Home Voyage Goes Well. Homo Voyage (Tomkinson) and Nelson Girl (Julian) broko away together at tho two-milo post, but they wero not far on tho journoy before Nebon Girl left her foot and dropped right back. Homo Voyage continued on alono to complete tho tyro miles in 4.47, running the last half-mile in 1.2 3-5. Homo Voyage was inclined to put in a short break occasionally, othorwiso his work was accomplished in good style. Tho Abbey (Clifton) was sent along at a solid clip for about a milo and a-half and completed the effort with a half-mile in 1.8, Tho chestnut pacer is carrying a bright appearance, but might bo all tho botter for a race. Anseline (Geo) and Laplander (Shaw), who was unhoppled, were indulged in strong work over a distance, Laplander being pulled up after breaking, while Anseline continued on solidly for another circuit, Ansolino trotted faultlossly and looks as well as ever blio hai done. Direct Morning (Cockbill) completed a serviceable task by sprinting half a mile in 1.10 2-5, and Mignonne (McMahon) paced a mile and a-half in 3.30 2-5, the last halfmile taking 1.7 3-5. Evelyn Locanda (J. Bryce) and Nelson Tasker (Julian) went Bteadily over tho tirst mile of a milo and a-half in 2.29 3-5, and they then sprinted to complete tho last half-milo in 1.8 4-5 and tho full distance in 3.38 2-5. Nelson Tasker, who trailed his companion for a mile, displayed a nico burst of speed in tho concluding stages. Arachne (Shaw), after going easily for tho first half in 1.16, completed a mile in 2.21 3-5, Sho paced with plenty of freedom and rattled off tho second half attractively in 1.5 3-S.
