WHARF AT KUTARERE.
NOW NOT PROFITABLE.
RESOLUTION TO LEASE*
[BY TELEGRAPH OWN CORRESPONDENT.] OPOTIKI, Thursday.
Representatives of the Whakalane County Council, the Opotiki County Council, t.ho Waimana Dairy Company, and the Northern Steam Ship Company met at Opotiki yesterday, to consider futuro action with regard to the Kutarere Wharf. Mr. J. H. Reid, chairman of the Opotiki County Council, who presided, stated that tho wharf was built in 3922, and had been a payable concern until the altered conditions of transport brought the opposition of motor-lorries and railways. Several factories which used to ship from the wharf had been closed, and their suppliers now sent cream to Opotiki. Railway competition had accounted for a lot of .goods going to Taneatua.
At the present time tho wharfages barely pay working expenses, apart from interest, which hgd to bo paid on the loan raised for the construction of tho wharf.
Tho view of tho council representatives was that the wharf could not continue to function under existing conditions, and it suggested that the wharf be offered for lease to tho Northern Steamship Company, failing which it would have to be closed.
It was resolved to offer it to tho shipping company, a reply to be given ab the earliest opportunity.
