TRAINING NURSES.
QUESTION OF REGISTRATION.
NEW PROPOSAL OPPOSED.
WOMEN INTERVIEW MINISTER.
[BT TELEGRAPH- —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Thursday.
Strong objection was voiced by tho women's division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union to the legislation proposed to bo introduced which will permit tho registration of nurses who have been trained in private hospitals. Two members of tho woman's division waited upon the Farmers' Union Conference to ask for the union's support in tho action they were taking in regard to tho registration of nurses. Mrs. J. Livingstono (Dannevirke) informed tho conference that tho women's division intended to present a petition, asking that they should bo heard before any legislation was passod providing that privato hospitals should become training schools for nurses.
When they were discussing tho matter with the Minister of Health, the lion. A. J. Stallworthy, that morning ho tried to get them to think in (ho samo way us ho did about it, but, added Mrs. Livingstone, " ho knows nothing about it. Wo practically told him so, but ho did not agree with us." Tho Minister said private hospitals were being bibught into line, but that it would not affect the reciprocal agreement. Tho fact was that a cablegram had been received from England, saying: "If hospitals run for gain were to become training schools, tho proposed change would affect tho reciprocal agreement." When the new proposals wero put before tho nurses by tho Trained Nurses' Association, only one out of 6500 voted in favour of them.
The president, Mr. W. J. Poison, maintained that they had tho finest training ground in New* Zealand for nurses in the public hospitals. The union unanimously agreed to give the desired support.
