CITY RATES STRUCK.
COUNCILLOR'S OBJECTION.
PROTEST MADE BY LETTER.
Rates for the year ending May 31, 1931, were struck by the Auckland City Council at a special meeting held yesterday afternoon.
Tho rates, which were fixed on May 21, aro as follows: —General rate, Is library, Id; hospital and charitable aid, sid; drainage, 2£d; sanitation, 2d. The special (interest) rate of Is was not struck at yesterday's meeting, being a statutory charge. Water rates identical with the preceding year's Were struck.
Mr. J. R. Lundon, who was unable to bo present, forwarded a letter from Ftotorurv. Ho stat-cd his objection to the increase of £d in tho total rato, and declared that thero was need for a substantial decrease in tho rating burden and for retrenchment. Ho also stated that his motion to rescind the resolution passed in May should properly have been considered at the special meeting, and ho asked that his letter be read and his protest against the striking of tho rates be recorded. x *
It was agreed that Mr. London's dissent should be entered in tho minutes.
