WEEKLY WESTFIELD SALE.

BEEF PRICES MAINTAINED.

GOOD DEMAND FOR STORE PIGS

Beef cattla were yarded in average num. l.ers at the Westfield fat stock sale yesterday and tho quality .was well up to standard. The demand was steadily m.tiin tained, prices realised being on a par with those of last week.

A good yarding of sheep met with steady competition. _ Prices generally were maintained at last week's level, although there was a slight easing for the lowei qualities. Lambs sold steadily at late rates.

Calves were offered in increased numbers and, while prices were firm for best quality, values tended to ease toward the close.

Pigs were yarded in average numbers and the improved prices of last week were maintained. Stores were in better demand and this was reflected in the prices.

The following is a summary of the prices realised for fat stock for the last two weeks at tho Westfield fat stock sales, together with tho latest quotations for New Zealand meat on the London market :

FAT LAMB PRICES HIGHER.

There were heavy entries in all the major sections at the weekly market at Addington to-day. Feature., of the market were the. firming in values for fat lambs and a decline in fat Bheep prices and the presence in the fat cattle entry of the first draft of North Island steers for this season. The entry of fat cattle was the heaviest for some weeks and was swelled by 49 head of steers from Gisborne. They averaged £ls la a head, and about 40s per 1001b. The remainder of this line of 105 probably will be entered next week. Values in this section were a shade eas'Or, consequent upon the big ontry, but to rio quotablo extent. The fat lambs sale was a very good one and values advanced Is and up to Is Gd a head. Thero was a very small entry of store sheep and the bigger proportion was made up of aged sorts. The basis of values was unaltered. A large yarding of fat sheep sold firmly at late rates, and a few pens of light wethers showed a slight advance in values. Pork • also firmed in price. Store Sheep.—There was a small entry, made up in the main of aged sorts. The basis of values was the same as that which lias been ruling for the past fortnight. Values were: Best ewe lambs, to 21s 3d: good ewe lambs, 17s to 19s 7d; ordinary mixed sex lambs, to 12s; orflinary wether lambs, 10s to 12s 3d; backward wether lambs. Fat Sheep —There was a. large entry, but in spite of this values remained on a par w ; 'h those of last week, with light wether 3 selling at a somewhat advanced rate. Fat Cattle.—There was an entry of 545 head, the largest for some time. A line of 49 head from Gisborne was entered and also a line from the West Coast and the Chatham Islands. Values showed little alteration, although there was an easier tone apnaj-ent, consequent upon the big entry. Best handy-weight steer and heifer beef made from 40s to 43s per 1001b; best heavy-weight steer beef, from 35s to 38s; medium quality beef, from 33s to 3Gs; good cow beef, 32s to 34s Gd; secondary, to 31s; rough, down to 24s Par 1001b. S'ore Cattle.—The yarding of store cattle was a small one and a poor one from the point of view of quality. The only pen of steers was from the Chatham Islands. They were backward yearlings and sold up to £G 3s. Two and a-half to three-year-old cows in reasonably forward condition, suitable for graziers' requirements, sold up to £4 15s; yearling and IS-months calves made £3 ss. There was a poor yarding of potting bulls, 'the best price for which was £5 ss. Dairy 'Cattle.—The entry of dairy cattle totalled '7l head. The general quality was average and prices all round eased on a dragging market. Good second and third calvers made £ll to £l3; best sorts, to £l4; medium sorts, £8 10s to £lO 10a; aged and inferior, £3 to £7 ; good heifers, £lO to £l2; medium sorts, £9 to £9 10s; others, £5 to £7 10s. Vealers.—The offonng of vealers was a small one and generally of very ordinary quality. Prices much the same as they . were last wjeck. Values were: Best runners, to £7 lGs; good runners, £5 to £5 10s; medium runners. £3 to £4 10s; medium calves, 10s to 555; light calves, 23s to 355. Fat Pigs.—There was a fair-sized yarding of -porkers, including consignments from the South. The demand was good throughout and prices were firmer than those of last week. Thero was also a fair entry of baconers, for which competition was keen at late rates.
