THAMES COUNTY COUNCIL.

MAINTENANCE OF HIGHWAY.

NECESSITY FOR REPAIRS

[ET TELEGRAPH- —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] THAMES. Wednesday.

The Thames County Council yesterday received an objection from fonr Puriri ratepayers against a -water rate, the ground for the objection being that they had incurred heavy expense in the provision of artesian supplies. They attributed the healthy condition of cattle to the nse of this water and said they would not under any circumstances use the river water for stock purposes. The Main Highways Board intimated that it did not insist, that traffic inspection should be confined to main highways, but the duties of subsidised traffic inspectors should be confined to traffic control only. If inspectors were engaged on other duties the board's subsidy would be disallowed.

The council resolved to co-operate with neighbouring county councils in the appointment of inspectors, the salaries to be subsidised by the Highways Board.

The Minister of Public Works, Hon W. B. Taverner, advised that a subsidy of £250, pound for pound, had been made available for the rebuilding of the Tairua Wharf. The Tairua Co-operative Dairy Company requested the appointment of an official to control the wharf. The following letter was received from the Public Works Department:—"The Main Highways Board has expressed great concern at the Thames County Council's inattention to the repair of the bitumen shoulders of the highway between Kopu and the Kauaeranga Bridge. Urgent repairs to the shoulders are necessary as previously advised and unless proper maintenance is carried out, particularly on the shoulders, the board may consider the withholding of subsidies for maintenance of the neglected lengths." The chairman, Mr. H- Lowe, said the repairs were under way. The engineer, Mr. J. Higgins, was accorded a special vote of appreciation for his services over a difficult period and was given leave of absence until his recovery from an illness.
