TAKAPUNA ROADS.
Sir, —A correspondent, "Torn Tyre.' has used your columns to express his dissatisfaction with the state of Walters Ilill and part of Hurstmere Road. If " Torn Tyre" took any interest in the borough's welfare he would know without my telling him that these roads are in their present state because the council does not possess the necessary funds to rectify the trouble. Nobby.
Sir, —"Torn Tyre's" remarks upon the alleged negligence of the Takapuna Borough Council in not providing adequate facilities for motor traffic in tho way of better roads are most unreasonable This year ratepayers have to find over £12,000 to meet interest and sinking fund on street loans already spent. In addition to tho above-mentioned amount the sum of £SOOO is allocated for maintenance. Receipts are as follows: —Licences: Heavy traffic, £1000; motor drivers, £100; hawkers', £5; petrol tax, £7OO. Which all goes to show that the unfortunate rar-e----payers are being bled white for the benefit of motorists, and that the petrol tax should bp. substantially increased. Generally speaking, Takapuna's leading roads are equal to those of any other simil<i>' borough in the Dominion, but, no doubt, further improvement could be effected if motorists were made pay for using them However, it is about time the local ratepayers considered the financial aspect and insisted upon the Government enacting new legislation.
