SETTLEMENT SCHEMES.
DISCUSSION BY FARMERS.
INVESTIGATION OF COSTS.
[BY TELEGBArn. —OWN COIIRESI'ONDENT.] "WELLINGTON. Wednesday.
Land development and settlement were discussed at the annual conference of the New Zealand Farmers' Union to-day. An Otago remit urged that the Government, before proceeding with any land settlement scheme, should take into consideration the cost of farming such land in order to ensure a reasonablo chance of success for tho new settler.
Delegates slated that the present Government was purchasing highly improved land at high prices and was not giving ihe new settlor a reasonable chance of success. It was also argued that only one of the six members of the Land Purchase Board had practical experience. The president, Mr. W. J. Poison, M.P.. said that the position was a serious one. High-priced estates run by experts-were being cut up and the subdivisions were being placed in the hands of raw re cruits. They could not carry on, arid the result was that the land went back, lie moved nn amendment that before fina' purchase the Government should submit the proposal to the Land Board of the district. Tlie remit as amended was carried.
