ENGINEERING TRADES.
APPLICATION BY EMPLOYERS.
NEW MATTER IN PROPOSALS.
OBJECTION BY UNION UPHELD.
[IIY TELEGRAPH. —TRESS ASSOCIATION'.] CHftISTCHUKCH, Wednesday
The Arbitration Court was occupier] all day hearing objections on the part of the union to an application by employers for a variation of tho award governing the engineering and boiler-making trades. Among the proposals of the employers was ono that female labour might be introduced for certain light work in tending machines. The Court was asked to amend the award made six months ago. The application was made in terms of a clause in the Court's judgment giving tho right to employers in the manufacturing sections of the industry to bring the matter before the Court in six months.
For the union it was argued that the Court had no power to make such a reservation, but the Court over-ruled this objection. A further objection by the union was that as the proposals contained new matter they should go before a Conciliation Council before coming to the Court. This point was upheld by the Court and at the suggestion of Mr. Justice Frazer the parties agreed to discuss the new matter in the proposals in a Conciliation Council.
The hearing was therefore adjourned.
