James Yates, manufacturer, of Newtown, a suburb of Sydney, was convicted to-day on several charges of defrauding the Incomo Tax Department by means of false returns and of understating his lticomo between 1924 and 1929 by £17,000.
Defendant was fined £6OOO, in default 12 months' imprisonment.
