AMATEURS START WELL.

The qualifying rounds in the British open golf championship wero played today at Hoylake and Wallasey. Tho scores at Hoylake included the following: Diegel (United States), Comps(on, 70, which equals tho courso record; Cotton, A Hiss, J. Taylor, Bobbio Jones (United States), Donald Soulby, tho Irish amateur, 73; Jolly, 74; Abo Mitchell, 76; Jim Baltics, Kay, R. Whitcombo, 77; L. McPherson (Melbourne), 90. Scores at Wallasey included tho following: W. Twine (London), 68; G. W. von Elm (United States), 71; C. J. Tolley, 72; Duncan, 74; Horton Smith and Don Moe (United States), 75.

noylako and Wallasey are in Cheshire. The amateur record for Hoylake is 'l6, tho open record 70, dono by J. IT. Taylor and E. R. Whitcombo. Tho amateur record for Wallasey was 73, done by A. W. Slater.

The open championship was won last year at Muirfield by Walter Ilagen, with a score of 292. J. Farrell, 293, and L. Diegel, 299, were second and third. They are all from the United States. Abe Mitchell, 300, fourth, was tho leading British player. There wero 242 entries, of whom 109 qualified (95 professionals, 14 amateurs, and for the last 36 holes 64 qualified to play (53 professionals, 6 amateurs).

THE SEMI-FINALISTS

(Received June 17, 11.15 p.m.) SYDNEY. Juno 17. The New South Wales amateur golf championship was continued to-day in inclement weather. E. Apperlv beat H. Morrison, 1 up; R. Lee Brown beat W. Dobson, 3 up and 1; n. n.attersley beat \V. Smith, 3 up and 1; S. Keane beat I. Harrison, 1 up.
