TRAINING AT RICCARTON.

HORSES FOR TIMARU.

PROSPECTS OF RADIATE

[BT TEtEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCn. Tuesday.

The tracks at Riccarton this morning Wore on tlio soft side ns a result of heavy overnight rain, and in consequence thoro were no fnst timea registered on the No. 7 grass, which was open for galloping. All tlio hoißos booked to leave for Tiinaru to-morrow for tlio South Canterbury Jockey Club's meoting on Thursday and Saturday were out, but trainers were content to restrict them to strong, serviceable work. Radiate was sent a mile and a-quartcr at ft useful pace. Ho is very fit just now, and lias only to jump well to collect some money at Tiinaru.

Tuku easily accounted for Hounslow and' Divinette over Bix furlongs in 1.20. The West Coaster appeared to appreciate tlio soft ground.

Gay Jim covored the same ground in 1.22. He is to go to Timaru, but is hardly forward enough owing to his old leg troublo restricting his schooling.

Royal Mint was well clear of Troilus and naze at the end of six furlongs in 1.18. Royal Mint, liko otherß of the Catmint breed, has a tendency for soft going and will bo seen to advantage when (I wet track is encountered. Kentish Lady and Rascal executed a similar task in 1.21 without being ridden out, and Pangolin and Imncer took 1.22 for the same journey.

Lancer was sent over three hurdles, jumping fast and clean, and, although lie will be under a disadvantage at Timaru in the matter of racing condition, his later prospects bear a promising outlook. _ Miss Bradbury and Charmeuso finished in front of Sweet Refrain after covering six furlongs in 1.20. Zeuxis beat Garvary over soven furlongs in 1.33 2-5. Zeuxis will bo riddon in his Timaru hurdle engagements by G. Salt, and looks likely to .race prominently. Ranelagh strode over a milo in 1.48. He. is to liavo his first race ovof a milo and a-auarter at Timaru on Thursday, and will be ridden by A. E. Ellis.

Heisler (G.. Salt) negotiated two hurdles in his usual dashing stylo. Nyah (I. Tilson) set off for a round of the country but after jumping tho first fence she dislodged her rider at tho first of tho brush double. She was remounted and got over the next obstacle, but did not complete tho round. S'ho will be ridden by L. Evans in the Hack .Steeplechase at Timaru on Thursday, but on any schooling she has done at Riccarton hor chances do not look very favourable. \V. Stone had Lord Thomond and Painkiller on the tracks. Tho remainder of his team, including Silver Paper, Aspiring and Tray Bond, have been kept in exercise in their homo paddocks, and are all in good order to enter upon preparations for spring racing. Painkiller has been nominated for the "Wellington meeting, and is to make the trip, while Lord Thomond may be sent to Sydney for the spring meetings. Silver Paper looks in good heart, and thero is every indication of him being seen in public again early in tho new season. Tho Oamarti Jockey Club has received very satisfactory ■nominations for its Winter Meeting to be held on July 5. The only Riccarton representatives are Haze, Starshooter, Royal Mint. Rascal, Kentish Lady and Troilus, nil from F. P. Claridge's stable.

LORD RANALD'S PROGRESS.

GOOD DISPLAY OF JUMPING.

[by telegraph.—own correspondent.] CHRISTCIIURCH. Tuesday.

• An interesting-feature of tho trncjf work at Riccarton to-day was a pleasing schooling task on tho part of Lord Ranald who. with his last year's pilot. W. Scobio. in tho Bnddlo, was responsible for a faultless display over a round of the country. 110 jumped each fence straight and clean without any hesitancy, and thero is no doubt about his outstanding ability. Lord Ranald has been carrying a doubtful leg since arriving at Riccarton. A short while ago it was suggested that he should be put aside again for p. term rather than risk breaking him down, but a noticeable improvement lately prompted his connections to go on with him. Now that ho ha 3 had his first schooling of the year it can bo expected that ho will soon bo seen out again in public, and although ho may not bo able to get tho necessary preparation for a Grand National ordeal in tho timo available, lie may at least contest tho minor steeplechnses at the August carnival.

HORSES BOLT FOR HOME.

CYCLIST CAUSES FRIGHT.

[ISY TKLEGHAM' —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Tuesday.

A cyclist unwittingly almost caused n serious accident just outside tho Trentliam racccounso to-day. An employee of A. Goodman wan riding White Doc and leading Lady Reno back from tho' track when tho bicycle-rider cut in closo to the horses and frightened them. Iho led horse pulled baok suddenly and jerked tho lad out of the saddle, which slipped round to tho flank, leaving him hung up by ono foot in a stirrup, His mount miraculously missed him with her hoofa until ho fell clear, and ho was little tho worse for his experience. Tho two mai c 3 then mado hot-foot for home, and galloped full speed along tho main bitumen road. A dog with huntaway tendencies joined in, but both horses kept their feet. The only injury was to Lady Rene's tongue, which was badly lacerated by tho bit when sho trampled on the looso reins in her flying gallop.

It is singular that since Black Mint, who is also in Goodman's stable, had a heavy fall on the bitumen road aoino timo ago, ho has not really reproduced his correct form.
