BOXING RING.
RICHARDS-TROWERN CONTEST
AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS.
The match committee of the Northern Boxing Association has had no easy task of lato in its endeavour to secure contestants who will give displays of the high standard it has set this season. It was in communication with the Queensland welter champion, Billy Richards, only to find that Wellington had secured his services. However, Wellington wanted him as an opponent for Phin Stone, tho former amateur champion, for a match on Monday next. Consequently, the local association has been ablo to arrange a bout for tho following Monday, June 30. Reg Trowern, the Auckland welter-weight, will bo Richards' opponent, and it will be tho first meeting of the pair in New Zeafand. Richards, who was born in Christchurch in 1905, but has fought for many years in Australia, is spoken of as a hard-hitting performer, who invariably pleases wherever ho fights. Reg. Trowern fought a great contest against Wally Hancock at Wellington recently, and is apparently in great form. His uggressivo style will suit Richards, who is also most forceful, and so tho coming fight should be a very spirited one.
Amateurs in Auckland are considering the necessity of some preliminary work in order to get into trim for tho forthcoming provincial championships, which will bo held on July 28 and 29 at tho Town Hall. Tho Northern Association conducted a very fine tourney last year, and tho bouts were practically without exception of a high order. Competent authorities are of tho opinion that this year tho tournament will see even better boxing. There will certainly be some very hard bouts, judging from performances put up at recent Town Hall carnivals.
Thero have been a number of first-class novices developed during tho year, and they are going f:*r toward llie top if their standard is maintained. Mr. Eugene Donovan has under his guidance a young boxer of somo thrco months' training who will surprise, many. This lad, Reg. Seacomb, is fast with gloves and feet, and will make trouble in tho feather-weight ranlcs.
Frank Taylor has been working out at the lire station gymnasium for his match with Kid Smith on the West Coast. Ho was training with lindall, a Londoner, and others.
Recent advice received by Mr. Eugene Donovan stated that C. Gait, who will be remembered as having fought locally, recently defeated the New Zealand light-heavy-weight, champion, G. McEwan, in a six two-minuto round bout at Invercargill. The New Zealand amateur championships will bo held at Palmerston North on August 21-23. Tlio annual meeting of the Now Zealand Association will take place on August 21. The Hamilton Association held its annual meeting on Monday evening." The need for more public support has been felt during the past year. Lou Bloom and Tommy Donovan \\«ill not meet until to-morrow week. This is owing to the postponement of tho GrimeDonovan fight. liiccardo Bcrtazzola, whom Tom Ileeney meets shortly, is a 6ft. 2in. Italian, born in Venice in 1905. He has a knock-out win against Pierre Charles, and has drawn with George Cook, but has lost to Phil Scott, Knuto Hansen and Maloney. Up to tho end of last year ho had 20 fights with 13 knock-out wins and thrco losses.
