(Received Juno 17, 10.35 p.m.) ' SYDNEY, June 17. It is many years sinco base metals wore at their present low levels. Heavy production, coupled with low consumptive demand, is responsible for the setback to copper, lead, spelter and tin, and internal troubles in China aro blamed for tho drop in silver. Accordingly tlio position at the Broken FTill antl Mount Lyell mines is precarious. Shares in these concerns aro entirely out of favour.
CANTERBURY PRODUCE. WHEAT MARKET QUIET. | t nv TKI-EORAPII.—OWN COIUIKSrONDKNT.] CHRISTCHURCII, Tuesday. Tim values for oats aro weaker and although there aro quite a quantity of Southern oats offering buyers are few and the markot very quiet. To-day A grade Cartons for Juno delivery may bo obtained at 3s lOd, f.0.b., s.i., and for spread delivery ere offering at 4s, with no buyers. B grade lias fallen in value to a corresponding extent. Chaff lias also eased slightly, in sympathy with oats, and today's quotation is £7 2s 6d for Juno delivery, that is, equivalent to £5 10s to £5 "12s 6d on trucks. Chaff for July-August-Septcmber delivery is worth a littlo in excess of the valuo quoted above. The interest in the wheat market, as far as the "free" supply is concerned, has practically concluded, and tho pool is the chief holder. There is very littlo business passing in next season's wheat, but somo has takon place on the basis of 5s 6d for Tuscan, 5s 8d for Hunters and to 5s lid for Pearl. There is littlo inquiry for . fowl wheat, which remains firm at 6s a bushel, f.oj)., s.i. Actually, tho price of potatoes for prompt delivery shows an easing tendency, but there, is very littlo quotable change in values. Tho position really is a false one, as the firming which has taken place during the last week has been confined to Cashel Street, and tho Auckland market, to all lutents and purposes, is over-supplied and extremely weak. If Auckland could be cleared tho position would pssumo stability, but thero does not seem any likelihood of this, with supplies still much in excess of tho demand. At present there aro not many tubers offering for prompt delivery, and such aro worth £3 15s a ton on trucks, while for tho end of Juno up to £4 a ton has been paid. July's are quoted at £5 7s 6d a ton, and July-August-Septembor's at £5 17s 6d a ton, with practically no buyers in each caso. The onion markot, continues very weak, with few offering and very littlo business passing. Tho quotations to-day range eithor jnsfc above or just below £3 a toil on trucks, according to quality. DAIRY PRODUCE MARKET* Dalgoty and Company, Limited, report having received the following cablegram from their London houso, dated Juno 36: —Messrs. Samuel Pago and Son report,—Cheese: Prices aro Is per cwt. higher; now New Zealand white, 78s to 70a; coloured, 84a to 855.:
