OPPOSITION TO BREWERY.
REFUSAL OF A LICENCE.
MANGERE DISTRICT PROPOSAL,
Satisfaction with tho refusal by tho Customs Department of an application for a licence to erect a new brewery in tho Mangere district was expressed at a meeting of the Auckland Council of tho New Zealand Alliance on Monday. Information that a licence was being sought was received by tho secretary of tho alliance, Mr. L. E. Falkner, somo time ago, and the alliance took steps to oppose the application. Members were in agreement with tho action taken by the Auckland Licensing Committee to discourage drinking by women in Auckland hotels.
Delegates to the annual meeting of the alliance reported that the alliance was determined to press for further reform in the liquor traffic, especially in the direction of closing bars on all public holidays and weekly half-holidays throughout the Dominion. It was also intended to press for the six o'clock closing of bars to be made more effective by proventing the supply of liquor after six o'clock except to boarders at meal-time.
