MOTOR DRIVERS' LICENCES.
ISSUE BY LOCAL BODIES.
CRITICISM OF PRACTICE
Criticism of tho practico adopted by somo local bodies of issuing drivers' licences to all applicants, irrespective of whether they reside in rfio area under tho jurisdiction of tho local body, was expressed at the meeting of tho Manukau County Council yesterday.
"I think wo should see if there is somo way of securing from local bodies the foes they havo collocled from drivers who should havo registered at our oflice," said tho chairman, Mr. F. M. Waters. "Tho Act sceins to bo rather ambiguous on tho point, and tho clause intended to give motorists away from their own district the power lo secure licorices wherever they happen to be, has been thrown open to abuse. Tho worst feature is that those who really should not bo given a licenco can get one easily by going out of their own district."
Mr. Waters expressed the opinion that many inspectors were too lax in issuing licences. "Somo peoplo havo liconces to drive a car who should not bo allowed to drive a wheelbarrow," ho said. Mr. S. Rickards said he knew of several cases in which people had driven to suburban local bodies' offices to procure their licences to avoid the strictness of the city officials.
