The accident was caused by n small tmck wh'ch the Minister of Public Works, after ar. innuirv. considers was deliberately placed on the line The derailment occurred when the express was travelling 8 t o speed of 50 miles an hour. Tlje fact that tho Premier, M. Tardieu, ff as travelling to Dijon to address 1500 guests at a luncheon at first led to the belief that tho disaster was due to a desire to wreck his train It is still believed (hat the truck was purposely placed on tho line, but as M. Tardieu's train had passed the spot three and a-half hours before the suspicion that the Premier was an intended victim has been abandoned.
