CORNWALL HANDICAP.

GREAT RACE EXPECTED.

STANDFAST THE FAVOURITE.

MANY HORSES WITH CHANCES. A splendid field of nineteen' is carded for tho Cornwall Handicap and a stirring contest is expected. Although there is a disposition to favour Standfast, who has' won at his last two starts, tho race is extremely opon and tho wagering is sure to take a wido rango. Standfast appears to bo tho right class of horso to win a race of this description and it is in his favour that ho is on tho improve and can also handle soft going. However, ho will have no easy task to win, for ther6 aro many in the raco who will run a solid hiile-and-a-quarter. In spito of his solid weight of 10.2, Corinax promises to run a solid race, aB ho is in great heart and has been galloping jn his best stylo. Then thero is last year's winner, Scalown, who threatens to mako an early return to form now that the tracks aro soft. Another mudlark in Maori Boy is also in splendid trim and must bo respected, whilo tho consistent and improving Paha may also havo to be reckoned with. Besides tho horses already mentioned others in Prince of Orange, Nassock, Barometer, High Pitch, Lucy Hose, I'ompeius and King Emerald must also bo taken into consideration and the winner certainly appears to be well concealed. Possibly the best of this division may be Lucy Rose end Prince of Orange and, if as well as when Bho finished second to Historio in January, Lucy Koso wil prove a tough proposition for tho best. It, is probablo that the race will attract the heaviest wagering of the day and in a good pool the main fancies may be Standfast, Maori Boy and Lucy Rose.

PENROSE HURDLE RACE.

SIR ARCHIE'S PROSPECTS.

The Penrose nurdles has drawn a tseful field, although most of tho candidates aro without recent form. Nothing appears to have a better chance than Sir Archie, who haa been jumping and working well. Sir Archie failed when previously tried over hurdles, but here ho looks to havo a golden opportunity to make good. Form suggests Glenstar and Taumai as his most formidable opopnents, but Glenstar may be hampered by tho soft going and, therefore, Taumai, who jumped brilliantly the other morning, may bo tho most troublesome. Of the others Quincomu and Harbour View may be tho most likely to mako showings, although Kairuri and Luminary are new aspirants to jumping honours with decid;d possibilities.

It should be a solid betting race and most support may be forthcoming for Sir Archie, Taumai and Harbour View.

HACK STEEPLECHASERS.

WEAK CLASS ENGAGED.

Tlie> class engaged in the Green Lane Steeplechase is weak and few of the candidates have any claim to notice. I'otoanui has the best credentials and, although ho has a solid weight, he should make a great showing in thi3 company. Archibald has shown an aversion to the steeplechase fences in his schooling and this does not auger well for his chance. Track form says a lot for Rahepoto, who has been schooling and galloping well, and ho will only require to display tho same dash in the race to hnvo a aplondid chance of winning. Hymestrason gave some promise in his last start, but ho is an unlikely runner. The others have nothing to recommend them, although Marita and Master Lu aro safe jumpers and St. Wnrrigal is an improver. The favourites may be llahepoto and Potoanui.

THIS WEEK'S TREBLE. RECORD IN PREVIOUS YEARS. Tho Auckland winter treble, besides being the moat popular one of tho year, is also the most difficult to select. In the past 10 years only two fuvourite3 hnvo won tho Great Northern. Hurdles, while Sir Roseberry is the only Great Northern Steeplechase favourite to win, and not one fuvourito has won the Cornwall Handicap. Following is a record of winners of each raco of the treble sinco 1920, showing tho order of favouritism and tho weight carried:— Great Northern Hurdles, Year. Horse. Fuvourito. Weight.
