AUSTRALIAN ACTIVITIES,

COMMISSIONER APPOINTED.

On his way to tako up his duties as Australia's first trade commissioner in Canada, Mr. L. R. Macgregor is a through passenger • to Vancouver by tbe Niagara, which arrived at Auckland from Sydney yesterday. Mr. Macgregor has had a highly successful record of Government sorvico in Australia, and is keen to assume bis new duties. " Most countries realiso now that :in order to keep pace with the times they must get out and look for trade, Mr. Macgregor said, "It is not sufficient to havo 'goods of quality to sell; tho markets must bo kept well supplied with information concerning the goods and neiv markets must be developed. Of course, trarlo relations already exist between Australia and Canada, and tho Commonwealth has been served by commercial representatives in that Dominion. However, Australia's imports from Canada havo been heavier thau tho exports, and iny principal duty will ho to do what I can to remedy that adverse trade balance." There were a number of Australian commodities in which a greater oxporfc 11 ado could ho built up, Mr. Macgregcr said. Already Canada imported considerable quantities of Australian dried and canned fruit, notwithstanding its proximity to California, but oven this inarkft was capablo of extension. Efforts would also ho made to increaso tho Canadian imports of Australian wines, and, like New Zealand, Australia was anxious to devplop tho market for its butter. Mr. Macgregor, who is accompanied by bis wife and family, wa.3 born in Scotland, and there received his early training in banking and law. He also gained experience in land management and at the age of 23 was appointed assistant manager fif a. large estate in India Owing to ill-health ho left, for Western Australia, and there handled tho wheat crop for tho Stato Government during tho war. In 1922 ho was appointed Director of Agricultural .Organisation in Queensland and in }026 Director of Marketing. Tla held this position when he was appointed to his new post.
