PROPOSALS FOR NEWMARKET.

PEAK PERIODS IN WINTER. LIGHTING ARRANGEMENTS. Several suggestions for improving the control of traffic in Newmarket were mado in a report presented to the Newmarket Borough Council by the traffic inspector, Mr. W. W. Murray, last evening. The report stated that tho control of traffic at tho peak periods on outward bound traffic from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. was, during the months of April to August, partially during the dark hours. At such dark periods it was necessary to have a light centred on the control man. In addition, a floodlight or spotlight to indicate to tho control officer the intention of the motor driver was advisable. A flood or cluster fight suspended over> tho centre of tho tram tracks at the eastern alignment of Victoria Crescent was the most effective, also a similar cluster light over Broadway opposite the northern alignment of Khybcr Pass. A cheaper method would be to instal two spotlights to faco the motorist on his signalling sido in each area. In addition, tho spotlight was necessary over the control officer under both conditions.

As tho dark periods of control were only for a short time in the winter months arrangements could be made for charges only for the periods the lights were used. The junction of Breakwater Road and Customs Street was a similar area to ilie triangle, and was supplied with a 500candie power spotlight, tho Triangle light being 200 or 250 candle power. Control by the Police Department was now carried out at fixed hours every day, and in addition, when racing and other functions brought a volume of traffic, it was controlled, even outside tho fixed daily hours, approximately 50 hours a week at a cost of 2s 3jd an hour. This was tho cheapest method obtainable and also the best.

The General Purposes Committee, in reporting on the questions of lighting and traffic control at the Triangle, considered the matter should bo further investigated before a decision was arrived at. Arrangements were being made, the committee reported, to meet tho Power Board authorities on the site so that the fullest consideration could be given to tho proposal.
