MUSICAL FESTIVAL.
NEED OF BROADCASTING. Station IYA has not been successful as yet.in arranging with the musical festival committee for a co-operation of the two bodies for the Music Week in August. Dr. S. K. Phillips, president of the Society of Musicians, stated some weeks ago that to produce the emulative spirit in music the public needed to attend the concerts, and for that reason the recitals would not be broadcast. No subsequent announcements have been made by tho committee, and it apparently intends to adhere to its decision. On the hand, only a limited number of people can attend the concerts. The gramophone, the radio and the "talkies" have admittedly proved detrimental to the cause of music, but it is only by taking advantage of the science of broadcasting that interest l can be revived in music to the extent desired. Tho broadcasting of the proposed concerts would help to inculcate an appreciation of music not only in the city but also throughout the Auckland Province, and possibly the Dominion. In the event of no arrangements being made with tho festival committee the station will observe Music Week with appropriate programmes of a high standard. This is in keeping with the policy of the station to assist tho cause of any art and to cater for the high-class tastes of tho majority of listeners. It is hoped tho festival committee will realise the value of broadcasting and accept the aid of IYA to mako the week an outstanding success.
