The first trial match prior to the selection of the All Blacks to moot the British team in tiic first tost at Duneilin next month was played here to-day, when the North Island Possibles defeated the Probables by 42 points to b. There was not nearly the difference between the teams as indicated by tho margin of points. The Possibles backs were superior in combination, and, combined with the individual play of Cooke, this was accountable fur the substantial difference of points. There was an attendance of about. 5000 nt tho Show Grounds, where the match was played. Fine weather prevailed mid a wind blew down the ground from the eouth-easj,. Tho playing area was hard, although well covered with turf. Ball, Wellington, replaced Minns, the 'Auckland wing-thrccquarter, and Stringfellow, Wairarapa, played in place of Nicholls, Wellington, nt second fiveeighths for (ho Probables team. Porter captained tho Possibles and Johnson the probables. Tho teams were as follows: —

POSSIBLES. Fullback.—Heazlewood. Threequarters. —Elvy, Lucas, Mackay. Five-eighths. —Cooke, Mackenzie. Halfback.—Corner. Forwards. —Porter (rover), Reid, Coulston, Finlavson, Steere, Campbell, Mahoney, McLean. PROBABLES. Fullback. —Thomas. Threequarters.—Fuller, Ruru, Ball. Five-eighths.—Stringfellow, Johnston. Halfback. —Ivilby. Forwards.—Solomon (rover), Irvine, Palmer, McWilliams, Harvey, Knight, Batty, McKay. Heazlewood's Great Goal. Possibles attacked from tho kick-off, although playing against tho wind. Tho ball we-iji out to Mackay, on the right -wing, but ho kicked too hard, enabling Thomas to force down. Tho Probables were penalised and Heazlewood kicked a great goal from 10 yards inside halfway. The Probables forwards rushed downfield following a weak left-loot kick by Heazlewood. Cooke attempted to check tho rush, but a penalty for holding the ball enabled Fuller to equalise the scores. . The Probables attacked again, butMackay checked a passing bout. Reid 'gained -ground with a good dribbling effort. He was well supported by McLean anil Finlayson, tho latter seoiirg wide out. Heazlewood failed at goal against tho wind. Irvine went oft with an injured foot, being replaced Ly Jessup.

Ruru was prominent in a passing rush by tho Probables backs. Fuller got past lilvy and centred, but Lucas stopped tho rush. Itcid, Campbell and Mahoney headed a good loose rush and then Cornelstarted a passing bout, which ended in Coulston scoring. Heazlewood converted against the wind, making the score 11—3 in favour of Possibles. Kilby, Solomon and Batty worked the blind side cleverly. Then from a penalty between the twenty-five and halfway Fuller kicked a fine goal. Possibles attacked once more with a passing rush, but Mackay's centring kick was too hard, enabling Ruru to force. Another rush saw [Mackenzie, "sell tho dummy" and pass to Elvv, who ran rlown the sideline liefore sending the ball back to Mackenzie, who scored. Heazlewood's kick just went wide.. Solid Tackling. Pas§ing rushes by both teams were met with solid tackling. Probables had a good opportunity, but the forwards wore penalised for offsido. Probables, hooking the bail from a scrum, allowed Kilby to send to Solomon, who was held up right on the line. Another scrum was formed, following which Corner cleared. Passing between. Ball and McWilliams nearly ended in a try, the hitter's pass going astray. Fuller made a good attempt from a penalty near halt-way, his kick just missing. A passing rush, in which Fin lay son, Campbell and Mahony were prominent, took play to the other end, where, from a scrum, Corner worked the blind side, enabling Mackay to score an easy try. Heazlewood converted. Batty dribbled beautifully from a scrum,, being checked by Heazehvood right on the line. A loose scrum ended in Possibles forcing down. Cooke then broke through the opposition, beating Thomas and Ruru. Ball chased him, however, compelling him to pass, and his transfer infield fell too short for Lucas. In the Possibles, Strange replaced Elvy lit wing threequarter,. tho latter having injured his ankle#, Gerrard, a former South Canterbury and South Island representative, took-Finlayson's place.
