THE BLACKBERRY.

EFFORT AT ERADICATION.

CAWTHRON INSTITUTE'S WORK

"It must not be thought that we are anywhero near conquering tho blackberry, but we have gone a certain distance," said Mr. A. F. Clark, forest entomologist to the C'awthron Institute, in an interview in Christ church last week.

"The. parasite which we are using is the bupresfed beetle, and if has given us some results." said Mr. Clark. "From

time to time we hear of farmers having discovered a honied, winged m >-»>in> o'ficr type of insect which is attacking their blackberries, but we have not derived any great help from the many cases which we have investigated. "In some instances 1 feel confident that it is nothing more than the brown beetle which has been noticed, These, of course, do cat the leaves of blackberries, but they do not kill tho plant. They, however cat. almost any vegetation, and their ravages among the apples trees, both of leaves and fruit, make them one of the worst pests we have."

Air. (.'lark added that whilo the entomological work at the institute had been before llio public, it shoidd not ho forgotten what was being done in ether departments, in the mycological, bacteriological and photographic sections, for instancc. Dr. Cm I is, mycologist, had rendered the fruitgrowers of Nelson inestimable service, and it was mainly due to her that black spot and eodlin moth were no longer among the serious troubles of the fruitgrower.
