AERIAL MANOEUVRES.
ATTACK ON NEW YORK.
NAVAL BOMBING MACHINES
(Received May 11, 5.45 p.m.) NEW YORK. May 9.
Now York city was a target yesterday for 131 bombing aeroplanes of the United States Navy. They were engaged in a theoretical raid to reveal how vulnerable New York is from tho air.
Hugo triple-engincd Martin bombers, each capable of carrying tons of high explosives, lessor bombing aeroplanes, battle aeroplanes for tho protection of these, and swift pursuit aeroplanes to drive off attacking enemy machines, took part in manoeuvres over Times Square.
Then tho air armada swept to the south, carrying out theoretical attacks elsewhere on its way to berths on board tho aero-plane-carriers Lexington, Langley and Saratoga at Hampton Roads, Virginia. Four dirigibles and 16 army fighting aoroplanes were also engaged in tho manoouvre3. Theoretically tho metropolis, which is classed as comparatively defenceless, was demolished.
