POLAR EXPEDITIONS.

■» MAWSON'S NEXT WORK. RETURN TO THE ANTARCTIC. ADELAIDE, May 5. Sir Douglas Mawson hopes to leave Hobart in the Discovery in November to continue his two years' programme of exploration in tho Antarctic. Most of the former staff will be available for the expedition. Particular attention will be paid to fishing, whaling and sealing potentialities in the southern soas. CLAIMS OF BRITAIN. SIR DOUGLAS* WORK. LONDON, April 29. Discussing the political and commercial aspects of Antarctica in "Antarctic Adventures and Research," Professor Griffith Taylor, formerly of Sydney University, now at Chicago University, writes, after mentioning the French annexation of Adelie Land: — In view of Sir Douglas Mawson's splendid achievements in cartography and science during his sojourn in this region, it seems likely that Australia may make a good case for British claims in Adelie Land, especially as the hinterland areas at tho magnetic pole, and also the head of the Taylor glacier and tho vicinity of Barne Inlet, have all been mapped by British expeditions." Professor Taylor points out that the French statement is vague. Speaking of that portion of Wilkes Land known as Adelie Land, Professoi Tayloi mentions the Norwegian annexation of Peter Island, which was the first land seen south of the Antarctic circle.
