NORFOLK ISLAND NEWS.

A REMARKABLE ESCAPE.: . i [from our own correspondent.] NORFOLK ISLAND, April '24. An islander nnd his "wife had a- wonderful escape from a bad accident. Leaving the cable station behind a young horse he was breaking in the man drove some five miles. He then turned round, and was continuing his journey when tho wheel of '.lie trap dropped off. Nobody was hurl, but no trace could bo found of the cap missing from the axle. Next morning he found tho cap a few yards frpm his original starting point. For over five miles he had driven at a smart pace over a hilly and serpentine road, the wheel remaining on the axle in spite o< the cap being off. ( . Until Easter week April was tho driest April on record for the island, but with the advent of Easter magnificent soaking rains arrived. The land hero is so porous and friable that a heavy rain every twenty-four hours would bo a blessing indeed. From September until March very littlo rain falls as a rule, and the island becomes extremely dry. After leaving Lord Howo Island with 19 passengers and 92 tons of cargo for Norfolk Island on board, the. steamer Makambo, from Sydney, ran into a heavy wind and sea and was 26 hours late in reaching Norfolk Island. Heavy seas on the coast delayed tho handling of her inward and outward cargo and she did not get away until next day. The heavy rain at Easter time interfered somewhat with the. celebrations at the churches. The Anglican Church at Kingston, All Saints', and the Mission Church, St. Barnabas, were beautifully decorated. The motor habit is running through the community like an epidemic. There are now over 80 motor vehicles on tho island and 11 more aro on order.
