THE TOHEROA SEASON.
MORTALITY NEAR HUKATERE.
"AMPLE SUPPLIES LEFT."
• *- Th'ero are more tolieroas on the Ninety Mile Beach this season than there have been for tho last seven years," said Mr. W. K. McLean, of Northland Canneries, Limited, yesterday. " Every year some small portions of the toheroa beds are covered by sand driven .by the easterly winds, but when it is understood that the beds cover a distanco of over 60 miles it is not reasonable to suggest that the toheroa beds are obliterated merely because, two miles of them havo been covered by sand."
Mr. McLean said that the present happening near Hukatero was unusual, as it was 19 years sinco such a thing had occurred previously. The loss would, however, in no way hamper canning operations for tho coming season, as the canners had more than sufficient for their requirements south of Hukatero. Ho said tho tolieroas that aro left could avoid tho affected area, and tho extra food available would enable the survivors to grow 1o maturity sooner.
