ENGLISH COUNTY CRICKET. HOBBS IN FINE FORM. .(Received May 3, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, May 2. In tho first round of the county cricket competition J. B. Hobbs made a century in both innings. Against Surrey Glamorganshire in the first innings made 474 (Bates 168, Hills 100), and in the second 205 (Turnbtill 61). Allom took four for 50. Surrey in Ilie first innings made .353 (Hobbs 137). Mercer took five for 61. In the second they made 190 for two (Ilobbs 111 not out). Glamorganshire wen on the first innings. Against Leicestershire Middlesex in (lie first innings made .196 (Lee 85). In the second they made 127 for five. Leicestershire won on the first innings. ENGLISH LEAGUE FINAL. .WIDNES BEAT ST. HELENS. (Received May 4, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. May 3. In tho League Football Cup final Widnes beat St. Helens by 10 points to 3, at the Wembley Stadium in the presence of 30,000 spectators, mostly from LancMilire, 12 of the 13 Widnes players having been born in the district. The other is a South African, Van Rooyen. The St. Helens team included the New Zealanders Butt, Hardgrave and Hal!, and a Welsh captain, Lewis, and also the internationals Fairclough, Ellaby and Halfpenny, for whose transfer St. Helens paid £250. St. Helens scored the first try, which was not converted. Then Widnes ran over their opponents in the first half, scoring a goal, an unconverted try and a penalty goal. In the second half St. Helens attacked hard, but neither sido scored. While torrential rain caused the abandonment' of cricket at Lord's, none fell at Wembley. BILLIARDS CHAMPIONSHIP. NEWMAN DEFEATS INMAN. (Received May 4, 7.15 p.m.) LONDON, May 3. The final scores in the billiards match between Newman and Inman in the English championship, second heat, were: Newman, 24,001; Inman, 10,104. BOXING MATCH IN SYDNEY. GOLDEN BEATS GILLESPIE. (Received May 4, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 4. At the Sydney Stadium last evening Benny Golden, 9st. B£lb., defeated Norman Gillespie, 9st. 51b., the light-weight champion, on a technical knock-out. Golden was too clover. The referee persuaded Gillespie to withdraw, as one eye was badly cut. ROWING AT SYDNEY. PUBLIC SCHOOL EVENTS. (Received May 4, 6.15 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 4. In spite of drenching rain and sullen skies, tho head of tho river rowing championships, which excite keen interest in the great public schools of Sydney, were held to-day. The final of the eights was won by Sydney High School, with St. Joseph's College second, and Sydney Church of England Grammar School third. The race was rowed in choppy water, and provided a brilliant finish, a bare length separating the placed boats. High School has now won the champion eights five times in six years. Other events were:— First fours: St. Joseph's College, 1; Scots, 2. Second fours: St. Joseph's, 1; Sydney High School, 2. Sydney High School has been head of {he river since 1925, except in 1923, when tho Church of England Grammar School won. Last year, over the lj-milc course from Walker's Hospital to Cabarita, High School beat Newington by three feet in 9m. 195., in rough water. High School also won the First Fours.
