COMBATING TUBERCULOSIS
CHRISTMAS SEAL CAMPAIGN. SUM OF £2500 REALISED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] ■WELLINGTON, Saturday. Tho Christmas seal campaign for funds to combat tuberculosis in New Zealand, organised at tl;o closo of last year, lias resulted in tho raising of a sum of £2500 for the purposes specified. This means that tho actual amount realised from the salo of stamps was £SOOO, but half of that amount, is retained by tho Post Office as ordinary revenue from the stamp sales. In expressing satisfaction with the result of tho campaign tho Minister of Health, Hon. A. J.. Stallworthy, pointed out that tho amount realised represented 600,000 penny contributions by the public of the Dominion toward an intensified campaign against a cruel disease of wide incidence in the community.
"The funds raised this year," said Mr. Stalhvorthy, "wili provide a nucleus for the establishment of permanent children's health camps in the Dominion. The damage rate of the disease, affecting as it does so many people in earlier years, is perhaps worse than the mortality rate. It was reported recently that there were 27 notifications of tuberculosis weekly in New Zealand. Only those closely associated with the medical services of the Dominion havo any idea of the measure of suffering." There wero initial difficulties in maturating tho Christmas seal campaign, and unforeseen delay in getting the stamps on sale, and this no doubt affected the measure of success. However, the Minister said ho was gratified at tho result and ho felt confident that this year it would at least be trebled.
